Self-Awareness is key here! We all have what I call “home base” with body language, in other words, what is natural to you. And we all have nervous habits or bad habits that we need to become aware of so we can better manage them. Identifying these elements of body language will help you better position yourself in any business situation.
For example, I used to tilt my head all the time; this was my “home base” comfort zone. There is nothing wrong with this but if I am trying to be more confident or authoritative, then keeping my head straight is best. You just have to practice until it becomes second nature and it will! I now might catch myself tiling my head while speaking then I instantly make it straight. Awareness and practice is the answer.
Have a friend video tape you while asking you questions you do not know what is being asked. This type of situation typically allows for nervous and/or bad habits to surface. Usually there are 2-3 issues. Then become aware and practice not doing them when speaking with others.
