Most of us think that performance is everything to your career. Sure, you have to perform to keep your job, but what distinguishes you from everyone else that has the same job? What makes you stick out? You might want to take a lesson from Megan Fox from the movie Transformers.

 

She was fired by request of Steven Spielberg who was not even the director of the movie, rather Michael Bay did; however, he helped produce the movie. It wasn’t just her big mouth. Megan commented that Bay ran his movie set like “Hitler”. This probably didn’t sit well with Spielberg.

It was more than just saying things inappropriately.  Bay said, “She was in a different world, on her BlackBerry. You gotta stay focused. And you know, the Hitler thing. Steven [Spielberg] said, ‘Fire her right now.”

“I wasn’t hurt, because I know that’s just Megan. Megan loves to get a response. And she does it in kind of the wrong way. I’m sorry, Megan. I’m sorry I made you work twelve hours. I’m sorry that I’m making you show up on time. Movies are not always warm and fuzzy”.

What have you said that was inappropriate about your boss, colleagues or even clients? Are you constantly on your Smartphone in meetings or in the office when in conversation with others? Do you complain if asked to work longer hours? Do you show up for work and meetings on time? Everything you do, say, touch and creates affects your reputation, which is your Personal Brand.

Remember, you have to perform to keep your job or you will be fired. But most are fired or not promoted because of what they say and what they do, or don’t do. What are you doing that is holding you back from reaching your full potential? What type of reputation do you have?
